On August 23 rd and 24 th , 2018, USAID’s After School Support for Teens organized its first annual “Summer School” in Xhevdet Doda School in Pristina. This activity involved 65 teachers and students from Xhevdet Doda and Hajdar Dushi Gymnasia. Activities of the Summer School were related to the development of the soft skills and critical thinking of youth. The topics covered were:  Arduino/Electronics, where students and teachers were involved in creating practical projects and problem solving with electronic components and programmable devices.  Music Technology activity through which participants gained basic knowledge of sound, digital music and the use of music technology in schools.  Media Literacy, where participants were acquainted with the opportunities of using the media and information in their daily lives, while identifying, as an active citizen, the sources of information and their authenticity.  Practical Activities on Entrepreneurship, where participants gained skills in identifying and exploring entrepreneurship opportunities, and enriched entrepreneurial knowledge.  Discussion on the use of technology in schools: After watching a documentary, participants discussed with field connoisseurs on technology and its impact on education. Support was given to the summer school by the MEST Minister and USAID Mission Director, who were present at the opening of the event and encouraged youth to learn and gain skills that will prepare them for life and work. The activity was also visited by Ipko Foundation and Bonevet Prishtina, who joined the participants in the documentary evening on the first day of the Summer School. The event attracted the interest of the national media, such as RTK, KTV, Klan Kosova, RTV 21, radios and online portals- some of the media showed the event live on TV (KTV morning show; EkonomiaOnline Live Streaming on FB). Participants enjoyed their stay in the Summer School.

Here are some testimonials: “I learned many new things from entrepreneurship, then I had the chance to try new equipment such as LabBox. I got amazed by the Music Technology activity-it made me think I could be a future professional in music”, said Beratrisa Zherka from Hajdar Dushi School in Gjakova. “I made new friends from Hajdar Dushi School with whom we were part of activities, and who showed fantastic entrepreneurial skills. I also learned about the Cubase application which is used worldwide to make music projects. The evening in Germia Park was exceptional, as all groups gathered to watch the documentary on education technology, which gave me a lot of ideas how to involve technology in my learning”, said Genc Abazi, student from Xhevdet Doda School in Pristina. “This Summer School presented us some new very interesting topics, such as Media Literacy which are in the interest of students and offer an insight into future potential careers for us”, said Vlera Potera, student Xhevdet Doda School in Pristina.
